"Saving Energy is both financially and environmentally
prudent...it is also a Federal priority! Nothing impacts faster than
lighting retrofit"
Description:The Timberlake Annex is a modern 12-story facility located in downtown Tampa, Florida. It houses administrative offices for various Federal Agencies including the district field office for the General Services Administration. The primary light source in both office space and common areas was a 3-lamp, parabolically-diffused 2x4 fixture using energy-saving magnetic ballasts. There were 980 of these. Courtroom space utilized 2x2 fixtures containing (2) U-bent lamps and an energy-saving ballast. There were 112 of these. Both fixture types used reduced wattage lamps, i.e. 34 watt lamps. Aging of these lamp types in certain working spaces had created unacceptable levels according to IES standards.Retrofit Goals:The Federal Government has mandated aggressive re-lighting programs in order to maximize energy conservation in Federal Buildings. Goals were to maximize reduction of lighting system watt demand but maintain |
existent light levels in common areas and raise them to IES
acceptable levels in the working spaces. The G.S.A. also wished to
perceptively increase light quality by using lamps with higher CRI
ratings and upgrade ballast performance to eliminate noise and lamp
flicker.
Solutions:In each 2x4 fixture, the (3) 34 watt lamps were replaced by (2) 32 watt T-8 lamps, 741 series. The 2 magnetic ballasts were replaced by a single electronic and the fixture was optimally reflectorized. A similar conversion was performed on the 2x2 fixtures except 17 watt T-8 lamps, 841 series were used. |
Results:The watt-draw of each 2x4 fixture was reduced from 115 watts to 60 watts, a savings of nearly 50%. The watt-draw of the 2x2 fixtures was reduced from 75 watts to 35 watts, a savings of of better than 50%. The overall impact of this retrofit was to reduce the watt-demand of the Timberlake's overhead lighting system by 60,000 watts or 60 Kilowatts. This is |
improvement as they operate silently and totally eliminate lamp flicker.
Financial Facts:Tampa Electric Company (TECO) rebated this conversion at the rate of $130 per kilowatt of demand eliminated. Factoring in all of the dollar savings generated by this conversion (including associated maintenance and HVAC savings) with the rebate, resulted in a projected payback track of less than 3 years. Annual savings of about $25,000.00 are projected.Environmental:On an annual basis this project eliminates the burning of 200 tons of coal or 900 barrels of oil, thereby eliminating the emission of over 1,000,000 pounds of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere.Contact: Mr. Ted Ricketts GSA Field Office 501 East Polk St. 6th Floor Tampa, Florida (813) 228-2351 |
